What is ETO ?

Ethylene oxide or ETO in short is an organic compound, a simple cyclic ether with the chemical formula C2H4O, which is a toxic carcinogen. Ethylene oxide has a tenacious diffusion and penetration ability, and has a killing effect on various microorganisms such as bacterial spores, fungi and viruses. It is a broad-spectrum sterilant and is now widely used in washing, pharmaceutical, printing and dyeing industries.

Ethylene oxide

Ethylene oxide residue detection Ethylene oxide sterilization device is the key equipment for disposable sterile medical device manufacturers. There are special requirements for installation, operation and use management. Using ethylene oxide as a sterilant can be used in Kills various microorganisms at room temperature, including spores, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. However, because ETO itself is a toxic carcinogen, which is very toxic to human body, the relevant standards of the medical device industry have strict requirements on the residual amount of ethylene oxide in disposable sterile medical device products.

ETO Health hazards:

ETO is a central nervous system depressant, stimulant and protoplasmic poison. According to relevant experimental test data reports, if an adult woman inhales 500 ppm ethylene oxide, it will experience pulmonary, pulmonary or respiratory toxicity, respiratory failure, convulsions or seizures, and finally suffer from nausea, vomiting, and death in severe cases.

Ethylene oxide was listed in class I carcinogens by WHO on October 27, 2017.
