Main chemical constituents of Centella asiatica extract
Modern research shows that Centella asiatica extract contains a variety of α-aromatic resin alcohol-type triterpenoids, including asiaticoside, madecassoside, Asiatic acid, Brahmic acid, Isobrahmic acid, Maclagasearic acid. There are also kaempferol and quercetin and its glycosides, madecassine, meso-inositol, centella oligosaccharides, sitosterol, vitamin C, carotene, green volatile oils and resinous substances.
Application of Centella Asiatica Extract in Cosmetics
1)Antibacterial activity
asiatic acid and madecassic acid in Centella asiatica extract can acidify the cytoplasm in plant cells. This antimicrobial activity protects the plant itself against mold and yeast attack. Experiments have shown that Centella asiatica extract has a certain inhibitory effect on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus acnes, etc..There are reports that fresh washed Centella asiatica is applied to treat boils in the affected area. Centella asiatica extract can be used to treat acne or in disposable disinfection care goods.

2)Anti-inflammation
Centella asiatica extract can reduce the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, improve and repair the skin barrier, thereby preventing and correcting skin immune dysfunction. Some people have carried out a compare experiment on the total glucosides of Centella asiatica and dexamethasone to treat the xylene-induced ear swelling test in mice. The experiments show that the total glucosides of Centella asiatica has obvious anti-inflammatory effect.
3)Anti-radiation
Yu-Jen Chen also found that Centella asiatica extract to skin at a dose of 16mg/cm2 to damage caused by the three different intensities of radiation on mice proves therapeutic effective, and there is no significant difference from tetrandrine, but skin reactions reduction appears 12 to 15 days ealier than tetrandrine, indicating that the accumulation of Centella extract has anti-inflammatory activity. Thanks to this property ,Gotu Kola extract is popular in after-sun repair, anti-allergic and soothing cosmetics.
4)Promoting fibroblast and collagen formation
Asiatic acid and its glycosides can be used externally to promote wound healing, stimulate granulation, promote epidermal regeneration, and help to generate connective tissue; it has better effect when used in combination with phospholipids to eliminate facial acnes.
Regulating the cortex metabolism , and it won’t affect respiration and biosynthesis of the skin. At the same time, it can also promote the secretion of vicious polysaccharides (such as hyaluronic acid) and increase the water retention of the skin.

5)Asiaticoside has an estrogen-like effect and can stimulate the growth rate of hair. Madecassoside can effectively inhibit the activity of melanin and has a whitening effect when used in skin care products.
